The department confirmed he would be assuming oversight of the Mueller probe from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Probably. Mueller has clearly pursued allegations that Trump criminally obstructed the Russian Federation probe, mainly by firing former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey in May 2017 - the move that led directly to Mueller's appointment. "The president's entitled to an attorney general he has faith in, somebody that's qualified for the job, and I think there will come a time, sooner rather than later, where it will be time to have a new face and a fresh voice at the Department of Justice", Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, who may be in line to head the Judiciary Committee next year, told reporters in August.

The president deflected questions about Sessions' expected departure at a White House news conference Wednesday.

Could a Mueller firing be challenged on legal grounds? Trump said Wednesday that he did not plan to stop the investigation.

The appointment generated immediate controversy given Mr Whitaker's previous public comments criticising the probe.
