Vietnam To Host F1 Race From 2020

Malaysia pulled out of the loss-making race a year ago after hosting it for almost two decades, while India and South Korea both dropped off the circuit in 2013, citing financial strains. Malaysia, though, chose to stop hosting the race because attendance has dropped and it wasn't recouping costs.

In 1999, Malaysia became the first country in Southeast Asia to host Formula 1, building a state-of-the-art circuit especially for the race.

But the event requires huge up-front investment from first-time hosts, and needs to be meticulously organised and properly promoted.

"You can't just hold a race and believe people will go out to buy go-karts and build go-kart tracks", Edmondson told AFP from London.

Organisers said VinGroup, the country's largest private company, had set up a subsidiary called Grand Prix Vietnam that will pay for the hosting fee, though they did not confirm the precise amount.

Vietnam will become the fourth country in the Asian leg of the Formula One calendar, joining the established Chinese, Singapore and Japanese grands prix.

Some cues have been taken from existing F1 tracks, with the tight Turns 1 and 2 modelled on the opening sequence at the Nurburgring.

COTA's design saw elements of several historic circuits bolted together - Silverstone, Hockenheim and Istanbul Park are all sampled at the Texan track.

But the bottom line for many is to provide a spectacle that will keep audiences coming back for more. A street circuit is a great way to do that.

Get April 2020 in your calendars, F1 fans, because that's when the inaugural Vietnamese Grand Prix will take place.

Neither Brands Hatch nor Donington Park, which hosted the 1993 European Grand Prix and was in line to host F1 from 2010 until plans fell through, are at the required level, while occasional ideas to hold a race in London have never been fully developed.
