He and the CHP officer went inside, according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean, who held an emotional news conference outside the bar early Thursday morning.

He said Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department, later died after being taken to a hospital. The weapon usually holds 10 rounds and one in the chamber, but the gunman used an extended magazine in this shooting, Dean said.

Twelve people, including Helus, were shot and killed in the incident, and numerous others were wounded. The extent of the surviving victims' injuries wasn't immediately known.

The first reports of shots fired came in around 11:15 p.m. California time Wednesday at the Borderline Bar & Grill about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff sergeant", Dean said while holding back tears. He first shot and killed someone working security then entered the building and shot several more people just inside before continuing his killing spree.

"I was at the Las Vegas Route 91 mass shooting, it's a big thing for us, we're all a big family and unfortunately this family got hit twice", said Nicholas Champion.
