1 dead in Melbourne stabbing; man attacked cops before being shot

The incident took place at Bourke Street as reported by Victoria Police.

The man allegedly set his vehicle on fire and stabbed a number of people this afternoon before being shot.

Video uploaded onto social media shows the suspect running at two police officers with a large knife as the blue ute burns in the background.

A man has been arrested and is under police guard in hospital.

A police spokesman later said that authorities are not looking for any other offender, adding that the investigation is at the "very early stage", and that there is "no known link to terrorism" so far.

"A small number of people are being treated for stab wounds".

The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

The centre of Melbourne's CBD is in lock down. Only the soles of the person's feet were visible.

Streets were closed and trams halted while police attend the scene.

Melbourne's anti-terror sirens and loudspeakers are being used for the first time, sounding out across Bourke Street.

Speaking at the scene, Superintendent David Clayton said: "Police quickly responded to the incident".

The Victoria Police took to Twitter to update on the situation.

One person was believed to be in a critical condition in hospital suffering a neck injury, a statement from Ambulance Victoria said. Their condition is not yet know. "A third person has also been taken to hospital".

"He seemed to be waving something, people around me screamed that he had a knife, but I couldn't see clearly from where I was", a witness told ABC News.

Police are asking people to avoid the area and said more information would be given when it was available.

Another said they heard "what sounded like a bomb and gun shot".

One witness, Sarah Krug said she was heading to the night noddle markets when "all hell broke loose".

"Police are now at an incident on Bourke St in the CBD".

Melbourne resident Meegan May tweeted: "Chaos in Bourkest as a guy seems to have set his auto on fire then attacking police with a knife".

'Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"I saw the auto on fire, it was a skeleton of the vehicle".

The incident comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January past year.

Police will investigate a possible copy-cat motive.
