Tuesday's vote was the first nationwide election since the 2016 presidential elections, during which Trump beat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republicans gained majorities in both the House and Senate.

Donald Trump's Republican party maintained its control of the Senate, but the Democrats regained power in the House of Representatives.

But Democrats are on course to win the House of Representatives, which would deal a blow to the president's agenda.

The election results are crucial for the future course of President Donald Trump and Republicans.

Despite Democrats hailing an end to one-party dominance at the top of United States politics, Trump spoke of a "tremendous success". Contributor Stephanie Ruhle said Trump's tax loopholes are immoral and below the office of the presidency, but said Trump likes to suggest it's "clever" how he games the system.

Democrats won half the seats they needed to claim House control with dozens additional competitive contests remaining.

Trump on Monday admitted the GOP could lose control of the House.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, 78, is expected to be re-elected as Speaker of House of Representatives, which is equivalent to India's Lok Sabha.

Democrats turned out to register disapproval of Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies on such issues as immigration and his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries.

Nadler could become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and the New York Times teased that Nadler "could bring the president serious pain and potentially oversee his impeachment". Pelosi said Americans have all "had enough of division".

Several television networks, including the president's favorite Fox News Channel, yanked a Trump campaign advertisement off the air on the eve of the election, determining that its portrayal of a murderous immigrant went too far. But Congress could not remove him from office without a conviction by a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate.

Nearly a quarter of voters considered immigration to be the top issue, while another one-fifth said it was the economy. Around 57% said they approve of the job he's doing, fitting with the positive news for Republicans as CNN predicts Republican Marsha Blackburn will take a US Senate seat.

A major surge in early voting also sparked speculation that the so-called "Trump effect" was motivating progressive voters to turn out in record numbers - but as numerous election experts have pointed out, early voting has been a rising trend for years, and it's unclear whether all those early voters support Republicans or Democrats.

Individual races "will be close", she said, but because of the "quality of our candidates" and emphasis on preserving health care, "I feel confident we will win".

Trump has headlined 30 rallies in two months and packed out arenas of adoring fans.

But Republicans performed strongly in the deep red states where Trump mounted a frenetic final campaign blitz and proved that despite his low approval rating he remains a potent political force among conservatives. Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, was favored for a suburban Newark seat that became open after the sudden retirement of the powerful chairman of the Appropriations Committee.

"In this election, they sought to energise groups that Clinton did not: young voters, Latinos, African Americans and infrequent voters", the daily said. The GOP's grip on high-profile governorships in Georgia and Wisconsin were at risk as well.
