Rooney is to come out of global retirement to make his 120th and final England appearance against the United States at Wembley on November 15. "There were a lot of experienced winners in the dressing room, and me and Wayne were close in age with similar backgrounds and we just got on and clicked", Fletcher told Sky Sports News.

"But I can understand why some people might think it makes the game a bit of a circus - and England have got an important game three days later (against Croatia in the Nations League)".

But he said he was relieved to be able to offer Rooney a tribute after dropping the forward from the England squad shortly before the player's retirement from global football. We have an opportunity with the game at Wembley to pay tribute.

It was announced by the FA on Monday that DC United captain Rooney would return to Wembley next month for his 120th and final England appearance against the United States. "But hopefully I can keep fit and healthy and score a few more goals".
