Americas pink wave: women win Congress record

Tuesday's outcome not only made US history, it also included many "firsts". And it will bring the share of Congress members who are women up from the current 20 percent to at least 22 percent. They also picked up two more firsts for Congress: Tlaib is the first-ever Palestinian-American and Omar the first Somalian-American to serve in that office.

Politics has become a family affair for Vice President Mike Pence, with his brother Greg elected to his former congressional seat in Indiana. The data showed that this year, white women split their vote between Democratic and Republican candidates for the House, but they preferred Republican candidates in 2010 and 2014.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez last night made history as the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress. Women held 84 out of 435 House seats, a record Aljazeera reported. He says the role women played in this election lived up to expectations.

The class of 2019 includes the youngest congressional women in history, 29-year-olds Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from NY and Abby Finkenauer from Iowa, as well as the first two Native American women, and the first two Muslim women, Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American Ilhan Omar.

With most of the results now known, women in the USA have achieved a number of significant firsts and played a major role in shifting the figures in Congress.

"Now, listen, I know for a fact none of us ran to make history, we ran to make change".

And several of the female candidates broke records of their own.

These wins were mostly fueled by the Democratic Party, which put a record numbers of women on the ballot.

Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar both became America's first Muslim women to sit in the House of Representatives.

"ICE was just established in 2003 and it was established outside of the U.S. Department of Justice, so a lot of this disturbing behavior we are seeing - parents can separated from their children, people getting picked up on the street - it's happening outside of the Justice Department", Ocasio-Cortez said in the June interview.

Democrat Mike Espy, who will face Mississippi Republican Representative Cindy Hyde-Smith in a December runoff, could become the state's first black senator since Reconstruction. It will also feature the first Native American women, the first Muslim women and the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Democrat women flipped MI and Kansas, defeating male Republican incumbents.

In the Senate, female Democrats lost some important races.

Nearly 80% of voters in a CNN exit poll said it's very or somewhat important that more women and racial minorities be elected to public office, with two-thirds of white voters agreeing. Women's issues are the economy, their education, their gun control.

Colorado voters delivered a historic win Tuesday with Rep. Jared Polis projected to be the country's first openly gay male governor.
