She'll be joined by Ilhan Omar, a Muslim woman elected who won her race in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District.

Voters in the United States (US) went to the polls on Tuesday, November 6, to participate in midterm elections that will help define the fate of President Donald Trump's first term in office after two years.

A pair of districts in the Midwest will add Muslim women to the ranks of the US Congress for the first time, CNN has projected.

She won a seat in the state's legislature in 2016, becoming the first Somali-American lawmaker in the country.

In recent interviews Tlaib has voiced support for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, slashing U.S. military aid to Israel and efforts to boycott the Jewish state. "But really I am not going from a first to another first", Omar said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Omar arrived in the U.S., aged 14, after fleeing civil war in Somalia.

Although her election was officially announced on Tuesday, she was elected unopposed as no one came forward to challenge Rashida in another deeply Democratic district.

Joining Ms Tlaib in Congress will be Ilhan.

At a subcommittee hearing past year, she lamented the policy positions that two veteran State Department diplomats had been required to present as representatives of the Trump administration.

The women, both Democrats, include Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American and former refugee Ilhan Omar.

At an August campaign event, Omar affirmed her belief in Israel's right to exist, saying it was "important for us to recognize Israel's place in the Middle East and the Jewish people's rightful place within that region".
