Sessions' removal is significant because, due to his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has overseen Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

Sessions said in a letter to Trump on Wednesday: "At your request, I am submitting my resignation".

In this photo from December 15, 2017, US President Donald Trump (L) sits with Attorney General Jeff Sessions in Quantico, Virginia, before participating in the FBI National Academy graduation ceremony. Trump tweeted Monday that "investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department".

Sessions' job security has always been in question. But he also had to live with sometimes humiliating attacks from a President he couldn't seem to please and the suspicions of career staff members who feared the politicisation of a Justice Department that prides itself on its independence.

The relentless attacks on Sessions came even though the Alabama Republican was the first USA senator to endorse Trump and despite the fact that his crime-fighting agenda and priorities - particularly his hawkish immigration enforcement policies - largely mirrored the president's.

Sessions has been an adversary of Trump's since March 2017 when he rescued himself from the Russian Federation probe.

Trump's White House has seen extensive turbulence with multiple high level departures. "I don't have an attorney general".

"Any investigation into President Trump's finances or the finances of his family would require Mueller to return to Rod Rosenstein for additional authority under Mueller's appointment as special counsel", he wrote.

Donny Deutsch and co-host Joe Scarborough were gleefully discussing that, within the next couple of months, the Mueller investigation would topple "one domino after another domino after another domino", when Mitchell burst their bubble. But Sessions also thought that by staying in the job, he had protected the integrity of the investigation, the person said.

"Since the day I was honoured to be sworn in as Attorney General of the United States, I came to work at the Department of Justice every day determined to do my duty and serve my country", the letter states.

Whitaker will now be in control of the Mueller investigation.

Mr Rosenstein in turn appointed Mr Mueller, a former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Despite it all, Sessions never found himself back in favor with the president.
