Cross Counter's win was the first Cup triumph for the famed Godolphin stable, who had never won Australia's greatest race in more than 20 attempts.

One TAB punter is certain to be rejoicing after placing $50,000 on Cross Counter at $10 following the barrier draw to win $500,000.

"They [Godolphin] have been striving to win this race for a long time", McEvoy said at the presentation.

Sheikh Mohammed's personal Melbourne Cup drought had stretched three decades back to 1988 when he was first represented in the Cup by Authaal, trained by the late Colin Hayes, which finished 19th.

Starting a $9 chance, Cross Counter settled in the second half of the field but producing a stirring finish to overhaul Marmelo ($12) who was initially being hailed the victor for Hugh Bowman.

"It's fantastic to be second in a Melbourne Cup, but to be second when you almost won [is hard]", Morrison said.

"We have campaigned over here the last three years now and have been competitive but we have always learnt each trip what horse we felt was going to be needed on the big day".
