Don't let the flu get you this holiday season

According to the state health officials, a year ago was one of the worst on record with almost 400 people dying during flu season in North Carolina.

The News & Observer in Raleigh reported Thursday that the illness claimed the life of an adult in the central part of the state.

The department did not release any details on the person who died. While elderly and very young people are the most susceptible to having the flu turn into something more serious, college students are in a unique situation that puts them at risk as well. Those that wish to get their flu shot after November 21 will need schedule an appointment with the Health Department.

Flu season started October 1 and runs through May. "We think that people do have a good amount of immunity against H3N2, which we've had for the last two seasons".

Last year's flu season was nothing nothing to sneeze at. But they increase when temperatures drop and the virus becomes more active. Both it and the flu vaccine can be accessed at public health offices, nursing stations, doctor's offices, access centres and for those age seven and up, at pharmacies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccine each year.

"By the way, I understand is that the flu virus circulating this year is a little nastier than usual, makes people a little bit sicker".

In North Carolina, flu infections are most common from late fall to early spring with activity usually peaking in January or February.

The 2017-18 season in Canada was a bit of an anomaly, surprising even some influenza experts.

Despite the hope that this country may duplicate Australia's flu season, Murti said Canadians shouldn't assume there's no point in getting vaccinated. "No matter what type of flu you get, it can be quite severe for many people and especially if you're somebody who's at risk for complications of influenza".
