They have twin single beds that can be pushed together to create a double bed, as well as air conditioning, flat screen TVs and WiFi.

Zip by Premier Inn will offer rooms from £19 a night on the outskirts of towns, with a £5 cleaning charge for customers staying more than one night.

The hotel chain's new budget sub-brand is to be called Zip, with its rooms coming with a window if you're lucky, and others just coming with a lightbox to simulate the thrill of living by yourself in a home that has a window.

Premier Inn is to launch a new no-frills hotel chain with pod-style rooms that will be less than half the normal size.

The rooms are compact; however, the clever design by PriestmanGoode - the design consultancy behind First Class Cabins for airlines including Air France, Lufthansa and SWISS - means that the space has been packed with useful features such as lightboxes, flexible bed formats & en-suite shower rooms.

Premier Inn is now Britain's biggest budget-hotel chain and owned by Whitbread.

The first Zip hotel, with 138 rooms, will open in the Roath district of Cardiff early next year.

A second site is set for Southampton, where 140 rooms are planned.

Zip hotels will have communal areas that serve breakfast for £3.95 per person and transform into a bar in the evenings, and there will be an ironing room on every floor.

Alison Brittain, Whitbread chief executive, said Zip would let the company access a wider range of customers, including those who are "on a particularly tight budget but still expect and deserve the basics done brilliantly".

'In developing the concept, we have undertaken considerable research, including having had six Zip rooms on sale to customers for many months.
