Kandahar Police Chief Raziq Killed In Attack

Two US citizens were wounded and a local police chief killed, as Afghan guards opened fire at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and US forces commander in Afghanistan, Austin S. Miller after his meeting with Kandahar officials in the city.

Since July 1, at least 9 candidates have been killed in attacks.

Local media outlets reported that a bodyguard for Governor Wesa opened fire on the officials while they were making their way to a helipad after the meeting.

The attack came after a meeting with other security officials, including the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General Scott Miller.

A bombing targeting a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation convoy near Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, has killed at least two civilians and wounded several alliance soldiers, Afghan and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials say.

The attack killed the province's police chief, Gen. Abdul Raziq, and the local leader of the country's main intelligence agency, the official said.

At least two U.S. soldiers were wounded in the incident, a statement by NATO's Resolute Support Mission said.

Abdul Jabar Qahraman had been meeting with supporters in his campaign office in the southern province of Helmand - a Taliban stronghold - when a bomb hidden under a sofa exploded, provincial governor spokesman Omar Zhwak told AFP. "Two Americans were wounded in the cross-fire and they have been medically evacuated", Col. Knut Peters, a Resolute Support spokesman, said in an email to Military Times.

Miller, 57, took over last month as the top USA commander in Afghanistan, replacing Gen. John W. Nicholson Jr. "We are being told the area is secure".

Raziq is often characterized as a US -backed warlord in Afghanistan. Hundreds of people have been killed or wounded in the months leading up to the long-delayed ballot. But he was also accused of torture and corruption.

The shooting in Kandahar continued a surge in violence across Afghanistan ahead of parliamentary elections Saturday.

The flamboyant commander, he had survived several attempts on his life over many years and narrowly escaped an attack last year in which five diplomats from the United Arab Emirates were killed in Kandahar.
