Like other Panameras, the GTS models can be specced with rear-wheel steering, too.

The power is good for the 2018 Panamera GTS to sprint to 62mph in just 4.1 seconds using the standard Sport Chrono pack, with the regular version hitting 181mph and the Sport Turismo topping out at 179mph.

In the new Panamera GTS, that equals out to a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine making 453 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which comes on strong at 1,800 RPM.

The Panamera GTS can reach 292 km/h, while the Sport Turismo is only a little slower, with a top speed of 289 km/h.

This includes a new black front end, black trim at the bottom of the rear, 20-inch Panamera Design wheels, heated multifunction sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles and Alcantara trim and the Connect Plus module. The brakes are now 390millimetres at front and 365millimetres at the rear.

Virgil van Dijk was also sent back to Merseyside prematurely due to an existing rib injury that's hampered him in recent weeks. It is reported that he was carried off on the back of a team-mate at the interval because a stretcher was not available.

That theme continues inside with dark grey Alcantara trimmings and upholstery as well as anodised aluminium inlays, but customers looking for something more colourful can opt for an interior package featuring contrasting shades of Carmine Red or Crayon. The GTS also features one highlight that is new to the entire Panamera range - the head-up display.

Another first for the Panamera GTS is the heads-up display, which projects all relevant information onto the windshield in full colour. Officially, GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport, which would make the complete name of the new model a tricky-to-pronounce Gran Turismo Sport Sport Turismo. This was followed by the 924 GTS and 928 GTS, which cultivated the concept throughout the 1980s and 90s. In 2007, the GTS badge was revived with the 911 Carrera GTS.

Pretty much any time Porsche gives us all a GTS variant of one of its models, it's cause for celebration because they always sit in the sweet spot between cost and performance. Prices start at £105,963 for the saloon and £108,110 for the estate, with both going on sale later this year.

The new-gen Panamera and its extended roof version, the Sport Turismo, now get the sporty GTS guise which is slotted between the standard vehicle and the powerful Turbo.
