Lenovo dominates the PC market

Number crunchers at Gartner have added up some numbers and divided them by their shoe size and calculated that the top five PC vendors in the USA now include Microsoft.

"Despite the third quarter typically showing strong consumer PC sales due to the back-to-school season, weakness in consumer PC demand continued, offsetting the strong sales in the business market", he added.

Overall PC shipments are also ticking along, according to Gartner's estimates, though growth is flat, which in the PC market isn't a bad thing.

The firm writes that enterprise demand driven by the Windows 10 upgrade cycle is steadily pushing the market in the right direction. Lenovo, on the other hand, has topped the list by acquiring over 23% of the market share. The top five vendors are the same as Gartner's, apart from Acer and Apple swapping places, which means IDC now places Lenovo in the number one position after HP came out top during Q2.

By IDC's metric, overall PC devices shipped had reduced year over year, from 67,971 in the third quarter last year. With Microsoft taking the fifth spot, Acer has now fallen from the top five PC makers list.

The top spot in the United States belongs to HP, with about 4.5 million machines sold, ahead of Dell at 3.8 million, Lenovo at 2.3 million, and Apple at 2 million.
