Educating the youth on mental health is critical

She says suicide is now the number one cause of death in young people ages 10-24 and says it's the first time it's been like that in Colorado.

We're already making progress when it comes to suicide prevention - the suicide rate is at its lowest for seven years.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), half of all mental illnesses began by age 14 and worldwide 10-20 per cent of children and adolescents suffered from mental disorders. To do this, we need to re-balance the curriculum by giving health and wellbeing the same importance as literacy and numeracy, and creating mentally healthy schools where pupils and teachers can thrive.

He added: "Every suicide is a preventable death and we are determined to do everything we can to tackle the tragedy of suicide".

The disclosure was made by the Provost and Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Timothy Adewale, at a press conference organised in Abeokuta to mark this year's World Mental Health Day with the theme: 'Young people and Mental Health in a changing world'.

The Prime Minister has also pledged up to £1.8 million to ensure the Samaritans' helpline remains free for the next four years, to help those most in need.
