Which is exactly what is happening as Polygon reports that James Gunn has been hired to write the script for Suicide Squad 2 along with the chance of possibly directing as well. He would reportedly write and possible direct a new film in that series.

The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit has been told that James Gunn's Suicide Squad will not be a sequel to David Ayer's 2016 film.

Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn may be moving over to DC. Suicide Squad 2 does not yet have a release date. After ending his initial run in 1992, modern Suicide Squad creator John Ostrander was brought back to the title in 2007 to revamp the team, not unlike how Gunn is now coming in to revitalize the franchise.

The studio had earlier roped in The Accountant helmer Gavin O'Connor to direct the film but he is no longer attached to the project. O'Connor was previously attached to the sequel pic, but eventually dropped out to work on The Has-Been, a Ben Affleck-led drama written by Brad Ingelsby, for Warner Bros. And a new report from CBR appears to suggest that its because the new Birds of Prey movie which has been fast-tracked by the studio had a similar plot to O'Connor's plan so he chose to leave the project.

Given that Gunn has been such a glowing aspect of the already-glowing universe that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes sense that the other side would do their best to seduce him.

This summer, James Gunn was sacked from his role as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after controversial tweets resurfaced from over a decade ago.

He continued: "Yeah it was a big fun silly movie". "Gunn has closed a deal to pen the script". And while Disney and Marvel plan to eventually make a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it'll without Gunn, which has caused Bautista to think twice about another reprisal as Drax. A move to DC-which is in desperate need of creative direction-would be a definitive middle finger to Marvel for letting him go, and Gunn's sensibilities would actually be flawless for the bad guys forced to do good of Suicide Squad.
