Rescuers still searching for missing child and two foreigners — MALLORCA FLOODING DISASTER

Emergency services in the Balearic archipelago tweeted that a man and a woman were found near Arta, one of the affected towns, "close to the area" where the vehicle of a missing German couple had been found.

Footage broadcast of the floods showed cars being swept away by the rampaging flood waters and many people remain trapped in their homes following the heavy rain which hit the region.

He told The Telegraph: "We are in contact with the Spanish authorities responding to flooding in Majorca, and urgently seeking updates from them".

A former mayor of the town of Arta near Sant Llorenc des Cardassar which was worst affected by the floods has also been named as one of the five fatalities.

The floodwaters tore down trees, swept numerous cars and trucks into piles of twisted metal and buried streets under mud.

The auto was submerged and on its side at the mouth of the torrent in S'Illot on Wednesday.

Hundreds of displaced residents are in emergency shelters, and about 80 soldiers were expected to join more than 100 rescuers who are working in the area.

Some parts of the island received up to 9in (23cm) of rainfall in a matter of hours on Tuesday evening.
