Kevin Tway capitalised on overnight Brandt Snedeker's collapse to win his maiden PGA Tour title on Sunday, triumphing in a sudden-death playoff to claim the Safeway Open.

"I'm going to look back on that one in a few years, really gave that one away", Snedeker told reporters.

"I played well on the front nine, but lost it on the back", said Snedeker, who was seeking his 10th PGA Tour victory.

The veteran made three straight back-nine bogeys to bring a number of players back into the fold, and seemingly lost control of his swing while missing a number of greens with short irons or wedges in hand.

Tway, the son of 1986 PGA Championship victor Bob, was in a three-way race for the title after going around in 71 in the final day and finishing on 14-under alongside compatriots Ryan Moore and Brandt Snedeker.

He had birdied 17 and 18 in regulation to complete a one-under par 71 at Silverado Resort in Napa, California, finishing tied with Moore and Snedeker on 14-under par 274.

Starting his 19th full season on the tour, Baddeley, 37, could not quite add to his four victories there but added $241,280 ($A342,000) to his $US20,543,617 in career earnings while some younger countrymen also impressed. The birdie at the 18th put him in a five-way tie for fifth.

Moore matched Tway's birdies at the first and second playoff holes, before succumbing at the third - the par-four 10th.

Moore, who started the day seven shots behind Snedeker, was happy just to have been in contention.

"This was a bonus, just to be in this position to have a chance to win", he added. I was kind of right there, but kind of hanging around.
