Ousted Guardians of the Galaxy director switches camps, tied to new DC Comics film

He will be taking on scriptwriting duties for the upcoming film with a chance to also direct, but that's still up in the air. Bautista has stood by the director, launching a campaign along with the rest of the Guardians cast to persuade Disney to reconsider their decision to remove Gunn, and even going as far to say that he would drop out of the film should Disney opt not to use Gunn's script.

The move comes after rival studio Marvel (owned by Disney) dumped Gunn in July over a series of dated shock-humor tweets.

"My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative", Gunn wrote in a statement on Twitter.

'To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. In a weird way, he's kind of the ideal choice for this project assuming that Warner Bros. doesn't take it away and try to recut it based on positive reaction to a trailer (which is what happened with the first Suicide Squad). The franchise has already spawned the spinoff Birds of Prey, with Margot Robbie bringing her antihero Harley Quinn to a female-driven film which will be directed by Cathy Yan, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead set to play The Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell to play Black Canary.

DC have got Gunn on board as writer and are said to be eyeing him for director as well. There was a meeting between Gunn and Alan Horn, but the studio stuck to its guns in pushing out Gunn.

At Disney, Gunn helmed both Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

There is now no release date for Suicide Squad 2. Bautista has been especially outraged in statements of support for Gunn. Our first-blush thought is a one-word "duh", as Gunn's propensity for dark, profane humor and redemption seems like a ideal fit for DC Comics' most blatant anti-hero collection of bad-guys-gone-good.
