Opera House must never again be used as 'billboard': Shorten

Opposition leader Bill Shorten says if Labor comes to power, he will review the laws protecting Australian World Heritage-listed sites such as the Opera House, to see if they need strengthening against commercial use.

On his Sky News program, shortly after the sails were illuminated, Alan Jones labelled the light-based protest as "childish stuff" from a "latte-sipping mob".

More than 265,000 people have signed a petition calling on the NSW government to reverse its decision to allow the advertisement.

The top-rated broadcaster publicly berated and called for the sacking of Opera House chief executive Louise Herron on Friday after she ruled out allowing words or branding highlighting The Everest race to be projected onto the building.

"Alan called your boss", he tells the guard.

Police are planning to upgrade security measures around the Opera House in response to potentially violent protests.

The Racing NSW promo is set to appear on the side of the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday evening.

The NSW premier denied widespread perceptions she had caved in to Jones, who has known ties to the racing industry and owns horses.
