Breast cancer remains public health burden - Dr Nsiah-Asare

The study, published in the journal, Clinical Cancer Research, said that women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations and those who had been diagnosed with breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) before the age of 35 were identified as being at increased risk.

Researchers combined the data from 16 different observational studies, The New York Times says, and found that participants who ate more processed meat were more likely to develop breast cancer than participants who ate less processed meat.

The definition of processed meat has been known to vary slightly. Processed meat is classified by the World Health Organization include sausages, bacon, corned beef, ham, beef jerky, hot dogs and salami.

Dr Nsiah-Asare said other risk factors that affect breast cancer include old age and being age 55 or older; genetic and familial tendencies, having dense breast tissue, and going through menopause later in life or starting menstruation at a younger age could not be controlled.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer noted the presence of "sufficient evidence" that processed meat consumption causes colorectal cancer.

The link was not observed when examining the risk among those who ate unprocessed meat.

Processed meat refers to meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavour or improve preservation.

But scientists did not suggest people cut processed meats from their diets entirely, and experts warned that the study should be met with caution. However, the researchers believe there are benefits to reducing intake of the food. Consumers should not be put off red meat and continue to enjoy it as part of a balanced diet.

"(You should) limit the consumption of alcohol, and increase fruits and vegetables", she added.
