ABC boss Michelle Guthrie ousted from role as managing director

In a very brief statement, Communications Minister Mitch Fifield - who has been a constant fault-finder of the ABC's political coverage - said "The government thanks Michelle Guthrie and acknowledges her service as Managing Director of the ABC for the past two and a half years in what is a challenging and rapidly changing media environment".

News of Guthrie's departure was reported by The Australian before the decision had been communicated to ABC staff.

The need for a better relationship with the Australian government was one of the reasons broadcaster ABC's managing director Michelle Guthrie was sacked effective immediately.

Milne said the decision had not been taken lightly but refused to detail what was wrong with Guthrie's leadership. "I am considering my legal options", she said.

"I wish everyone at the ABC every success in the future as they continue their mission to keep all Australians informed and entertained".

In June, high-profile Melbourne ABC mornings presenter Jon Faine slammed her at the Melbourne Press Club for her "failed strategy" and "staying silent" after the former Turnbull government freezed its funding by $84 million over three years in the May budget.

"I personally think Michelle has done a good job and the board has been very happy with many, numerous things that she does".

Guthrie replaced Mark Scott as managing director in May 2016, after he had previously remained in charge for a decade.

Long-time ABC critic and Liberal MP Eric Abetz said Guthrie's replacement must bring to an end "the frolics masquerading as news and "comedy" from some ABC employees".

ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie has been sacked.

David Anderson, the ABC's director of entertainment and specialist divisions, will act as managing director while a search commences for a new permanent boss.

"The board has given long and detailed consideration to this serious matter".

Guthrie has been a divisive figure during her tenure as ABC boss.
