Up until now, we've only seen Joaquin Phoenix in his Arthur Fleck days both in set pictures and in a portrait released by Phillips himself.

We'll be sure to get more footage of Phoenix's Joker as filming continues on the project, and with it, hopefully some answers to boot. Now director Todd Phillips is showing off the clown makeup.

Unlike the largely vilified first photos of Jared Leto as Suicide Squad's heavily tattooed version of the Batman nemesis, Phillips' Instagram post - a "Camera test w/sound" scored, aptly, to The Guess Who's "Laughing" - proves that Phoenix's Joker will more closely resemble small-screen Batman legend Caesar Romero by way of serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The footage doesn't show much but it does give us a look at Phoenix sporting some eerily familiar Clown makeup. Realistic, rumpled, and totally bonkers without being over-the-top, this is exactly the kind of look that could make this film feel as grounded and demented as it angles to be.

While fans have only so far seen Phoenix's role come alive in sneak peeks of this origin movie, the film boasts a pretty acclaimed cast.

The film also stars Zazie Beetz (Atlanta, Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow, Molly's Game), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story, Castle Rock), Brett Cullen (42, Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions, Barry), Douglas Hodge (Red Sparrow, Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (Maron, GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn, Going in Style), and Shea Whigham (First Man, Kong: Skull Island).

Joker is set for release October 4, 2019, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.
