Amazon could open 3,000 cashierless Go stores by 2021

The source reveals Amazon is looking to target areas with young, busy residents who are willing to shell out a bit more cash for higher quality food delivered at the pace of a typical fast food restaurant.

An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.

The company unveiled its first cashier-less store near its headquarters in Seattle in 2016.

The 2,000-square-foot Chicago location, which gets daily deliveries, offers packaged salads, snacks and sandwiches, according to CS News.

Customers have to scan a smartphone app to enter the store. They're billed automatically through their Amazon accounts, and they don't need to wait in line to pay for their purchases. Narrowing the focus to prepared food-to-go would reduce the upfront cost of opening each store, because it would require fewer cameras and sensors. Focusing on prepared foods rather than groceries could help boost profit margins, and some of the existing stores are already doing that.

Research firm eMarketer predicts that Amazon will control more than 4 percent of the U.S. digital advertising market by the end of this year.

A 3,000-store footprint would catapult Amazon into the ranks of America's major physical retail chains. It would also give Amazon a much expanded footprint of physical stores in the United States, adding to its more than 350 Whole Foods stores.

Amazon Go is basically a dream come true for introverts. Amazon has committed to opening stores in NY and San Francisco.

If a shopper puts an item back on the shelf, Amazon removes it from his or her virtual cart.

Amazon wants to have at least 10 stores open by the end of this year, then 50 in 2019, then possibly a rapid expansion to about 3,000 by 2021, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The move comes as another corner of Amazon's vast empire is set to expand.

Opening more locations in the same city would also allow Amazon to cut down on costs since they could take advantage of a centralized food production facility. For reference, there are about 155,000 convenience stores across the country, and about 80 percent of those are combined with gas stations.
