Vikings make Dan Bailey signing official

Following the Week 2 tie against the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings have quickly decided part ways with rookie kicker Daniel Carlson after missing all three of his field goal attempts including the game-winner. The Vikings have waived DT David Parry to make room on the 53-man roster for Johnson.

Bailey missed four games last season with a groin injury, but finished 15-of-20 on field goals and 26-of-28 on extra points.

A day after cutting rookie kicker Daniel Carlson, the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday signed Dan Bailey, a former NFL Pro Bowler and ex-Dallas Cowboys player, as the hoped-for answer to the team's kicking woes. The move was called "Very easy" by Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, who replied "Did you see the game?" when asked if the process was hard.

Bailey, 30, was released by the Cowboys on September 1 in a move that saved Dallas a few million dollars by keeping a Canadian Football League journeyman, Brett Maher, over him. He was released after one game, but the Seahawks had hoped to re-sign him to the veteran minimum of $790,000 before the Vikings outbid them.

Bailey joined the Cowboys in 2011 and made 188 of 211 field goals, 88.2 percent, making him the second-most accurate kicker in National Football League history. He's also converted 276 of 278 career extra-point attempts after touchdowns, according to data provided by the Vikings. "That last one was probably more just confidence after missing twice early". Perhaps had he made that final kick the team would've given him more time to "figure it out", something that clearly couldn't happen after he didn't make the 35-yarder (or 48 and/or 49 yarders). Forbath performed relatively well in 2017 as the Vikings advanced to the NFC championship game, but general manager Rick Spielman sought an upgrade with Carlson, who left Auburn as the all-time leading scorer in Southeastern Conference history.

Minnesota traded up into the fifth round of the draft to select Carlson with the 167th pick in April, giving up two draft picks in the process. "We'll get some more sixth-rounders next year, I'm not anxious about that".
