Ramos backed by ITF over 'regrettable' Serena rant

It was a U.S. Open finals match, not an exhibition game. Williams then went on a weird rant, in which she called umpire Carlos Ramos "a thief": 'You are a liar.

And then 10 minutes later it was complete chaos as Ramos hit her with a game penalty for verbal abuse. The tennis superstar claimed that umpire Carlos Ramos exhibited sexism against her for being a woman expressing her emotions.

The WTA later called for equal treatment of all tennis players and coaching to be allowed across the sport. But she's always, always paid for it.

Both the Women's Tennis Association and U.S. Tennis Association backed Williams after the match.

"Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis", said the ITF. "The WTA supports coaching through its on-court coaching rule, but further review is needed".

For what it's worth, this is the second time in less than a month that Knight has been criticised as racist, with the artist coming under fire in August for this cartoon about African youths in Melbourne.

Things seemed to settle down as Williams went on to break Osaka for a 3-1 lead, but she gave the break right back in the next game with a pair of double faults, prompting the former champion to smash her racquet on the court. Osaka even apologized to those settled in Arthur Ashe Stadium for beating the American.

Several umpires, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Times that they were considering boycotting future Williams matches.

But during the final there was no celebration.

Mohamed Salah targets Premier League, Champions League double
Sadio Mane has revealed he urged Roberto Firmino to play with one eye against Paris Saint-Germain just 24 hours before kick-off. PSG threw the game away in the dying moments and £198million superstar Neymar was made to be the scapegoat by many fans.

It's hard to imagine Williams looking even more powerful on the court than she does on a regular basis, and yet the cat suit did so by just existing.

"The point is he (aggravated) the situation". "In my mind I really wanted to know what was going on".

Not to mention that Ramos has put up with worse from a male player. Nadal ranted and raved and did not face any of the same recriminations Williams did.

Laughably, during the very same tournament a typically petulant Nick Kyrgios was cajoled and babied by a male umpire to get over his sulking and go out and play the match. But if you were to see a female athlete today who looked like that, someone would probably say that it's not good for her to look so "masculine".

Jimmy Connors once called an umpire "an abortion" with no fallout. Williams told Ramos. "You owe me an apology". She said, men "are badgering the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens".

"He's never taken a game from a man because they said "thief".

Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres' Show she said: "I couldn't tell what was going on, it was so loud and a little bit stressful".

Serena and Venus Williams have changed tennis for the better. The argument that a man "would have" gotten away with such behavior does nothing but highlight that Serena Williams exhibited poor behavior.

"The cartoon about Serena is about her poor behaviour on the day, not about race", Knight said.
