Hume said that he believes Senate Republicans will "move forward" beyond the scheduled hearing between Ford and Kavanaugh, because Ford had said she was ready to testify and was given time to prepare.

"Why didn't senator Feinstein bring this up at her meeting with judge Kavanaugh?" he said.

Born into a well-off family in Montgomery County, Maryland, Ford has said she spent years working to recover from an assault as a young girl in that world of prep school parties - by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, she would disclose years later. But in the days since she publicly accused Kavanaugh, the lawyers said, she has been the target of "vicious harassment and even death threats".

Ford's attorneys said in the letter that they wanted an FBI investigation of the incident before she testifies in front of the committee in Washington. "And we want to get it over with", Trump said.

Official: "FBI Will Not investigate Kavanaugh Unless the White House Demands It", said that he was told by a senior US official that the FBI will not investigate because what Ford is alleging is not a federal crime.

Ford's husband Russell said that he recalled her mention of Kavanaugh by name. Speaking to reporters on Monday, President Trump said, "if it takes a little delay, it'll take a little delay".

The president has already rejected the idea of bringing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation to reopen its background check of Mr Kavanaugh.

Metal allegedly found in banana an 'isolated' incident
WA Police have confirmed they have received reports of needles being found in strawberries in Kelmscott, Spearwood and Bull Creek. Officers say they have found more than 25 instances of fruit with needles concealed inside, across all six states of Australia.

Republican leader John Cornyn of Texas noted that Ford has admitted she doesn't remember some details of the incident.

She announced that she had signed the open letter on Twitter Monday night.

While she does not plan to testify, Ford's friends are coming to her defense, saying she does not have a political agenda.

An FBI investigation "should be the first step in addressing the allegations", wrote the lawyers for Ms Ford, who is now a college professor in California.

Yet a few Republicans have suggested there may have to be a delay, at least in the Judiciary vote on the nominee - which was scheduled for this Thursday - in order to hear from Ford. "A proper investigation must be completed, witnesses interviewed, evidence reviewed and all sides spoken to".

Asked Tuesday about being one of just four women on the Senate Judiciary Committee and how that will affect the nomination proceedings, the Hawaii Democrat said, "Of course it helps that there are women on that committee". Republicans hold a majority of 51:49 in the Senate.

The development came after Senate Republicans and Democrats fought over who should give evidence at the high-stakes hearing six weeks before major congressional elections. Democrats are now favoured to take the House while becoming increasingly confident of adding the two Senate seats that would give them control of that chamber.
