Lloyd earlier teased to Deadline that there would be "quite a few milestones in these people's lives" in the coming tenth season as well as a Russian spy storyline.

The Dunphys and the Pritchetts will be saying goodbye soon - to a "significant" character, and possibly "Modern Family" entirely.

According to the series's co-creator Christopher Lloyd, the show's last season is going to take a dark turn as the family deal with the loss of a loved one.

Lloyd gave no hints as to who will meet his or her demise, but said the passing "will be a moving event ― an event that has repercussions across several episodes".

The suspense is already driving us nuts!

Viewers have grown with the extended Pritchett family, which includes actors Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet.

'But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it'. While co-creator Steven Levitan has made statements about the show ending, Lloyd is hopeful that the show will continue past season 10. He added, "there's a decent chance we'll see it happen". I hope there is. Given the relentlessness of old age, there's also the possibility that one of the main characters' senior parents can bite the dust, like Phil's father Frank (played by Fred Willard).

Who will we lose this season?

"I'm hoping that we have some news on that [soon], and if it winds up that we tried and just couldn't make it work, we will have a great final season for sure".
