The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit says mosquitoes collected from a trap in the municipality have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports one new human case of West Nile virus (WNV), bringing the state's total to 31 so far for 2018.

This is the second human case in the county this year, with the first being reported at the end of August.

Additional precautions issued by the state include covering up exposed skin by wearing long-sleeves, trousers and socks when outdoors, and to install or fix window screen to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside your house.

"The rain Denton County has received [last] week cannot be attributed to these recent cases, but standing water left from rain last month could have left breeding grounds for these mosquitoes", Rainey said. Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to label instructions. More than 1,600 mosquito samples have been found to carry the virus.
