One of these big clubs was Manchester United.

Paul Pogba has had issues with the the current Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho.

According to Spanish media outlet OK Diaro, Messi is on board with the idea of signing Pogba, whose relationship with Jose Mourinho and Man United supporters has become increasingly strained.

One option, however, could be to complete a loan deal in January ahead of pushing a permanent move through in the summer - something Paris Saint Germain did to complete the transfer of Kylian Mbappe.

The Mirror reported last month that United held talks with Bayern Munich over a potential £44.5m deal to sign the German World Cup victor following their friendly at the Allianz Arena in early August but once again they failed to get a deal agreed.

Boateng added: "I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me".

Boateng went onto reveal that he personally spoke to Mourinho regarding Manchester United's interest. "Everything has to fall in place to top this club, if I do it. [Bayern Munich boss] Niko Kovac gave me the feeling that I am very important for him and the club".

Boateng had previously played in the Premier League for Manchester City, but the 30-year-old defender could not be tempted to leave Bayern, even if the thought of a new club intrigued him. It was no escape, but rather the thrill of a new challenge.
