The Associated Press says the gunman took his own life as a sheriff's deputy got close.

Officers responded to calls of a shooting at a trucking business just after 5pm (local time), Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said during a news conference today.

Along with his wife, the attacker killed a man at a trucking company in Bakersfield.

He then chased and shot another man who showed up, Mr Youngblood told KERO-TV.

Another person arrived on the scene and opened fire on the gunman.

The man then hijacked a vehicle with a woman and a child inside in Fillmore, which is about 100 miles from Bakersfield.

When deputies pulled the suspect over, the man shot himself in the chest.
