Li, a well-known expert in artificial intelligence, was on leave from Stanford for almost two years.

Dr. Fei-Fei Li will be replaced at the end of the year as head of Google Cloud AI by Dr. Andrew Moore, dean of the school of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, Google announced on Monday. Meanwhile, the current head, Fei Fei Li, would reclaim her former position at the Stanford University as the Head of the AI department by the end of 2018.

In internal emails, Fei-Fei Li had praised "Project Maven", a contract in which it was supplying the Pentagon with AI-powered image recognition software - and warned colleagues to keep it secret for fear of a media uproar over "weaponized AI".

As for Moore, he is no stranger to Google, having previously worked for the company between 2006 and 2014. This is part of a broader effort by the company to return to mainland China since pulling its search service from the country in 2010. She also spearheaded recent developments in Google Cloud for businesses, implementing ML systems that were easy for enterprises to use.
