Finau earns final US wild card selection for Ryder Cup

Finau will be the first homegrown Utahn to play in the Ryder Cup, after being selected by US captain Jim Furyk.

Finau has since gone on to post top-10 finishes in each of the first three FedExCup play-offs, including a share of eighth at the BMW Championship, securing him a maiden Ryder Cup appearance. Furyk chose Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau last week as his first three picks to play at Le Golf National in Paris at the end of the month.

The eight other players who qualified automatically are US Open and US PGA Championship champion Brooks Koepka, Masters victor Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.

Finau had been expected to get the 12th and final spot on the Ryder Cup team based on his overall play, particularly of late.

"What an unbelievable body of work this year", Furyk said of Finau.

Finau is one of seven players on the US team that is in his 20s. Finau, who has one career PGA Tour victory, said he was ready for the pressure of the Ryder Cup. At Le Golf National, the US will be trying to win an "away" Ryder Cup for the first time in 25 years.

Finau has won only one tournament on the PGA Tour, the 2016 Puerto Rico Open that was played opposite a World Golf Championship event. "I also played on two Junior Ryder Cup teams". I'm pretty easy to play with. I'm a great team player - what I mean by that, there won't be any locker room noise with me.

European captain Thomas Bjorn went with veterans for his four captain's picks, adding Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Sergio Garcia to a team that saw five rookies qualify on points. After finishing second and a tie for fourth in the first two FedEx Cup playoff events, he ended up eighth at the BMW as he finished strong with a 5-under-par 65 in Monday's rain-delayed final round.
