After years of hype, consumers are about to see if 5G networking can live up to the promises of blazing fast data speeds - at least if they're living in the right neighborhood to test out the next-generation service.

Verizon has talked extensively about bringing 5G service to it customers and even confirmed its plans to make it available as soon as this fall.

Beginning Thursday, some Sacramento residents will be some of the first in the world to be able to purchase Verizon's 5G broadband internet service, which will start October 1. According to Verizon, the peak speeds can reach close to 1 Gbps. Instead, this is home internet, which Verizon is touting as ideal for cord cutters looking to ditch cable TV. There are "no data caps" either.

Verizon 5G Home will be available for pre-orders as of Thursday, with its "First On 5G" members to get the first three months free, after which the service will cost $50 per month for existing Verizon Wireless customers on smartphone plans, or $70 per month for non-Verizon Wireless customers. Advertised prices include taxes and fees. A complimentary three-month package for YouTube TV and a free Apple TV 4K or Google Chromecast Ultra are also included in the early bird bundle.

Branded as Verizon 5G Home, the broadband internet service will initially be limited to Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Once this happens, it will become the first commercial 5G service to launch in both the United States and in the world.

While the service won't be using the mobile 5G standard, Verizon will utilize mmWave technology which uses spectrum between 30 and 300 GHz.
