Hurricane Florence intensified to a Category 4 hurricane on Monday as it barreled towards the US East Coast, where millions of people are bracing for potentially devastating winds and water later this week. "We ask you to heed the warnings - today is the day".

Almost 1000 prisoners in SC will not be moved from their cells, despite a mandatory evacuation order in the area.

Florence exploded into a potentially catastrophic hurricane Monday as it closed in on North and SC, carrying winds up to 140 miles per hour (220 kph) and water that could wreak havoc over a wide stretch of the eastern United States later this week. But one thing it might actually help is to reduce the overall wind speed, though we're still going to have gusty winds around here which combined with that wet soil could bring down some trees.

Spokesman Howard Fowler said restoration could take "weeks instead of days", even though 20,000 workers, including crews from outside the area, were standing by. "This is going to be a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast".

"Hurricane Florence is the strongest storm to target the Carolinas and this part of our country in decades", Byard said.

Deal cited the storm's "forecasted southward track" in a statement declaring a state of emergency.

At this height of the Atlantic hurricane season, Florence was being trailed on east-to-west paths by two other storms, Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Isaac, but neither packs the deadly punch of Florence.
