Braving Bad Weather, Space X Launches Falcon 9 Satellite Successfully

The takeoff was the 16th SpaceX mission this year, technology website Ars Technica reported.

SpaceX, the rocket company spearheaded by Elon Musk, successfully launched another Falcon 9- carrying a Telstar 18 Vantage satellite-in the early hours of Monday.

"Liftoff!" tweeted SpaceX as the Falcon 9 soared to the skies at 12:45 a.m. EDT (04:45 UTC) on September 10. The rocket's first stage landed on SpaceX's "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship stationed some 400 miles (650 kilometers) east of Cape Canaveral.

The satellite was originally set for liftoff in July but was delayed several times. East Coast Times and launced the communications satellite into orbit 32 minutes later. The massive spacecraft weighs 15,564 pounds (7,060 kilograms), making it one of the heaviest commercial communications satellites ever launched.

While the Telstar 18V was carried into geostationary orbit by the second stage of the Falcon 9, the "Block 5" booster made a flawless ocean touchdown about eight minutes after the launch. The droneship, which was named in honor of sci-fi author Iain Banks, is a remote landing platform for the rocket.

Telstar 18V is the third high-throughput satellite in a constellation launched by a Canadian company called Telesat, and it will be the first satellite in this fleet to provide coverage over the Asia-Pacific region. Its Ku-band payloads of HTS spot beams and focused regional beams will provide customers operating in Southeast Asia, Mongolia, Australia & New Zealand, and the North Pacific Ocean with greater choice and flexibility to serve today's bandwidth intensive applications.
