Marian Vajda said Sunday night with a giddy chuckle, his eyes wide, after Djokovic got there with a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open final.

With the US Open 2018 title in his bag, Novak Djokovic equals Pete Sampras' 14 grand slam titles in men's singles.

'I feel like these guys, rivalries with these guys, matches with Federer and Nadal, have made me the player I am, have shaped me into the player I am today.

Djokovic, the No. 6 seed, missed this tournament a year ago as he struggled with an elbow injury that ultimately required surgery. "I try to take the best out of myself in those moments".

"You can lose or win a trophy, but the love from the crowd, it could be even bigger than the tournament", he said.

6-3 victory over the 2009 victor under the roof at Arthur Ashe stadium - rain in NY meant cover was needed - gave the Serb a third crown at the US Open and 14th grand slam title overall.

It was Djokovic's 15th win over the Argentine and fifth in five at the Slams.

"I thought of tennis, thought of the emotion that tennis provokes in me in a way".

Coming after his triumphant return at Wimbledon in July, the latest success is evidence enough that technically, tactically and physically Djokovic is back to his best.

Novak Djokovic wins 3rd US Open title
Never was that more apparent than the game that stood out on this evening: with Djokovic serving while down 4-3 in the second set. Federer lost in the fourth round in NY , while Nadal retired from his semifinal against del Potro because of a bad right knee.

From that point a Djokovic victory looked inevitable and, after Del Potro wiped out a final-set break at 3-1 in the following game, the Argentine produced a double fault to give Djokovic another chance for a 5-3 lead.

Novak Djokovic won his third US Open title and equalled Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles as he beat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the men's singles final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in NY on Sunday. He was my childhood idol. "I know he will be back here with the Champions trophy". Djokovic tied Sampras's 14 Major titles. 'I was hoping he was going to be here tonight. He inspired me to start playing tennis.

"But at the same time, life showed me that it takes time for good things, it takes time to really build them, for things to fall into place, so you can centre yourself, balance yourself and thrive".

"I can not lie there were a lot of moments where I was doubtful, where I didn't know if I would be able to play at the highest level, compete for Grand Slams with these guys".

"I was very, very disappointed with my performance that day", Djokovic recalled Sunday, explaining that he went hiking in the mountains in France to clear his head after that setback. One man with no excuses is three-time masters champion Alexander Zverev who remarkably has only gone beyond the fourth round of the Grand Slams only once at this year's French Open.

Djokovic said it was the kind of heavyweight clash he's learned to embrace.

Asked if Djokovic could surpass Federer's record, del Potro was emphatic in his response.

The duo saved three championship points in the deciding set in a match that took more than 2½ hours to complete.

"I will try to keeping (troubling) these guys, playing in the next tournaments, and we'll see".
