The album is now 38 times platinum according to the RIAA.

The Recording Industry Association of America revealed on Monday that the album had reached the 38x platinum mark, meaning that it had been sold and/or streamed 38 million times.

The Eagles' greatest hits album has moonwalked past Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to become history's best-selling album of all-time.

Thriller had sold 33 million, so the American band are comfortably in the top spot at the moment. Thriller surpassed Greatest Hits shortly after the 2009 death of Michael Jackson, but with a gap of five million copies, it seems unlikely that Thriller will regain the lead anytime soon. Thriller, meanwhile, sits at 33x platinum since last being counted in 2017.

The Eagles' album Hotel California has also jumped from 16x platinum to 26x platinum, with streams and downloads of the title track making up a large amount of the figure. Sales and streams for "Thriller" were last updated a year ago. Now, 1,500 streams equal one "album sale" - as do 10 song downloads. "It's been quite a ride", Don Henley, 71, the group's lead singer and co-founder, said in a statement carried by Rolling Stone. The band released that mega-hit in 1976.

That's not even the limit of the Eagles' record-selling dominance.

"We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years". 1977's Hotel California comes in at number 3 too, proving once and for all that despite the advancements in culture over the past half-century, baby boomers are still ruling the roost.
