Sony Has Now Sold Over 3 Million PlayStation VR Units Worldwide

The company last announced the number of PSVR sales in 2017, when it crossed the 2,000,000 units sold threshold, which isn't bad for an unproven VR system that initially cost more than a PlayStation 4 (PS4) and just as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro console on which it relies.

Sony announced today that it has sold more than 3,000,000 PlayStation VR (PSVR) systems worldwide, as well as more than 21.9 million games and "experiences".

What's more, Sony has also announced the release dates for two upcoming PlayStation VR games.

Creed: Rise to Glory is a premier VR boxing game from developer and publisher Survios that puts players in the role of Adonis Creed as he climbs the ranks from amateur fighter to spotlight champion. Creed: Rise to Glory hits PlayStation VR September 25.

Statista forecasts that Sony will account for 43 percent of the VR devices shipped in 2018, with Oculus following at 19.4 percent and HTC at 12.9 percent.

Of all the major VR headsets out, PlayStation VR is among the most approachable and least expensive. Sure, it may not be the most advanced VR headset out there, but it is still able to deliver an exciting VR experience for PS4 players. This number is especially surprising because in an investor relations event that took place in December of a year ago, Sony said that while yes, PSVR's numbers are continuing to grow, the growth of the VR market overall was "below expectation".
