The new Cobra Jet makes its public debut this weekend at the 2018 Woodward Dream Cruise.

The 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet is the next step in a long line of Cobra Jet drag cars stretching back to the original 1968 Mustang Cobra Jet.

Power is provided by a unique 5.2-liter V8 engine which is based on the familiar 5.0-liter V8 that resides in the Mustang GT. Billed as the fastest production Mustang on the drag strip, the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet will be a seriously rare sight: Ford is only making 68 examples.

Like previous Cobra Jets, the 2018 model has been created to be legal for National Hot Rod Association drag racing, along with several National Mustang Racers Association and National Muscle Car Association classes.

A roll cage comes standard as do racing seats, and you have the option of Race Red or Oxford White, with 50th Anniversary graphics and badging available too.

"From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build on Cobra Jet's success at the track over five decades", Eric Cin, global director, Ford Performance Parts, said.

Buyers can choose from Oxford White or Race Red colors for the vehicle with 68 units being produced to celebrate the 1968 year the original Cobra Jet debuted in.

You may well question the relevance of such an offering but Ford certainly doesn't, seeing it as the continuation of a lineage which inspires customers to purchase and modify some Mustang muscle of their own.

Beyond the engine, the new Cobra Jet benefits from unique four-link rear suspension with drag race-specific coil-overs. With no VIN numbers, the fifty 2008 Mustang Cobra Jet M-FR500-CJ cars produced weren't actually road legal. Leaver said we can expect more info about the new Cobra Jet at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show or PRI Timing. Credit for this formula goes to legendary East Coast Ford dealer Bob Tasca, grandfather of current Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang NHRA Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III and the man who coined the phrase "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday".
