American third seed Stephens surged into Sunday's final against world number one Halep after overpowering Svitolina 6-3, 6-3 in the day's second semi-final.

The Romanian broke Barty in the opening game and broke again for a 4-1 lead en route to taking the first set.

Romanian Halep, the 2016 Rogers Cup champion, will meet the victor of the late semi-final between defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine and U.S. Open victor Sloane Stephens for the title on Sunday.

"We played a good match", Stephens said of their showdown at Roland Garros.

Barty was the more composed player in hard, windy conditions as Bertens, who had seen off ninth seed Karolina Pliskova and eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova in her previous two matches, was undone by 31 unforced errors in the 55-minute quarter-final.

Top-seeded Halep won four of the match's first five games, and broke Barty twice before the 22-year-old Australian registered her first, and lone, break in the sixth game. "She's very talented. She's moving okay" said Halep, focused on "trying to stay stronger on my legs, and trying to be with the energy at the highest level as possible" Halep said of the Australian.

She had nothing to add to her scheduling dispute, which saw her play four matches in three days after a night session was postponed due to rain. She won the last time it was in Montreal in 2016.

"I think I talked enough about it", she said.

Svitolina rallied briefly to get back to 5-3 but then handed Stephens another break and the first set when she sent a forehand wide. "I pushed her very back on her backhand, then I could just receive a shorter ball, an easier ball for me to open the court".

Barty made up for her singles loss with a semifinal win in doubles, teaming with Demi Schuurs to beat Nicole Melichar and Kveta Peschke 7-5, 6-3.

"When you're playing good matches in big tournaments like this, I don't think it's peaking too soon".
