Seattle-Tacoma International Airport confirmed an airline employee stole the plane. The employee who stole the plane had cleared Horizon Air's security requirements, including a 10-year review of criminal records, and had an airport SIDA security badge, Tilden said.

Officials at Sea-Tac International Airport say an Alaska Airlines plane that was stolen by an airline employee and has crashed in Washington state.

"I don't know, man", the pilot answers. "People need to realize that flying an aircraft is not hard, flying it correctly is the hard part".

Mr Russell, 29, who authorities say was suicidal and did not have a pilot's licence, died after the plane plummeted into a small island yesterday.

Tower audio identified the suspect as "Rich". Periodically, his voice cut into the dispatches.

"This is probably jail time for life, huh?" "But holy smokes, I got to stop looking at the fuel, because it's going down quick".

"I got a lot of people that care about me", he said on the recording. Others reported that the man had supposedly "buzzed" Mt.

Alaska Airlines said that it was aware of an unauthorized take-off of the airplane operated by a sister carrier Horizon Air. He replied, "yeahhh right".

"There is a runway just off to your right side in about a mile", the controller says, referring to an airfield at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

"Oh, Richard", said the controller, "We're not going to worry or think about that".

"I thought it was incredible and terrifying at the same time". I wouldn't want to do that. "I hope they can make it through this". In a blog post, he said he and his wife met while at school in OR in 2010 and married a year later.

The plane left the ground at 7:32 p.m. and air-traffic controllers lost contact with it at 8:47 p.m., Tilden added.

Two military F-15s chased the plane "within a few minutes of theft of plane" and "kept plane out of harms way and people on ground safe", the sheriff's department said.

He had worked for Horizon Air for more than three years, towing and tidying aircraft and loading bags. A KTVA reporter who visited the Russells' family home in Wasilla Saturday afternoon was told that Richard had graduated from Wasilla High School in 2009, but that the family had no immediate comment. He would take my shifts if I needed. "We don't know how he learned to do that", he said. "He was always smiling".

Ed Troyer, of the sheriff's office, described Russell as "suicidal". "Hannah and Beebo met at a Campus Crusade for Christ gathering at Southwestern Oregon Community College a year ago", the site reported.

"Our first date, he kind of cornered me into it", Hannah Russell said to the site. "I was dead set against it".

The air-traffic controller responded calmly, seeming not to want to upset Rich as the conversation continued and he tried to coax Rich into landing somewhere. He also says it's extremely lucky no one else was hurt.

Earlier, the pilot alternately expressed remorse for his actions and a desire to perform aerobatics as flew around Puget Sound, pursued by the two F-15 fighters.

Alaska Air Group, which owns Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, said the man was a ground service agent for Horizon Air, which would have allowed him access to the planes on the tarmac at the airport.

"An airline employee conducted an unauthorized takeoff without passengers at Sea-Tac", the tweet read, "aircraft has crashed in south Puget Sound".

It will take a few days to see some questions answered about why "Rich" plowed himself into the ground.
