He may have lost the match, but Nick Kyrgios demonstrated a strong reminder of his power game during his Rogers Cup clash with Stan Wawrinka. We had a good quality of tennis.

Standing in the way of Nadal is Wawrinka after the three-time major champion outlasted Marton Fucsovics 1-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (12-10). "I've known him, I've practised with him, but I've never played an official match so definitely not easy to find a rhythm from the beginning of the match", said Djokovic.

Canadian wild card Felix Auger-Aliassime upset Lucas Pouille of France 6-4, 6-3, cruising into the second round in his main draw debut at the Masters 1000 tournament.

But it was Wawrinka who stole the show with a moment of genius - when it looked as though the ball was beyond his reach - the three-time Grand Slam champion pulled off a magical return.

Wawrinka was back to his best having struggled this season following a second knee operation but there was no stopping Nadal, who produced some extraordinary sliced shots and forehand winners to leave the crowd in awe. That contest was also remembered for Kyrgios insulting his opponent's girlfriend Donna Vekic.

He had some trouble late in the second set, losing his serve to set up the tiebreak, before rallying.

When Kyrgios was 4-1 up in the first set, with Wawrinka serving, the Aussie absolutely nailed a forehand victor that left his three-time Grand Slam-winning opponent grasping at thin air and applauding the shot.

Novak Djokovic advanced over lucky loser Mirza Basic 6-3, 7-6 (3) in his Toronto opener on Tuesday.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second before Nadal edged ahead in the tiebreak to win 7-5, 7-6 (7/4).

Fellow Canadian Milos Raonic, meanwhile, saw his tournament end with a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1 loss to No. 41 Frances Tiafoe of the United States in a match that was also delayed and interrupted by heavy rain that wreaked havoc on the day from the outset.

He also broke Fognini three times in the second set - two to erase a 4-0 deficit and one more to go up 6-5 - before holding serve for the victory. He last won the Rogers Cup in 2016.

Azarenka stormed through the first nine games of the match before France's Mladenovic got on the board. Any victory is good to get more confidence.
