A Chinese tourist has died after being bitten in the chest by a hippo he was trying to photograph in Kenya.

Six people have been killed by hippos in the area this year.

The Kenya Wildlife Service said in a statement Sunday that another Chinese tourist was injured in the incident Saturday night and received treatment in the local hospital in Naivasha, 91 kilometres (56 miles) miles southeast of Nairobi.

Hippos are considered the most unsafe land animal in Africa because the world's third largest mammal can be extremely aggressive and territorial.

A witness, Joel Ochieng said the foreigner got too close to the animal which turned against, him biting him on the chest.

"His colleague survived with minor bruises and was treated at #Naivasha District Hospital". He said the victim was "bleeding profusely".
