With a scorching hot forecast throughout the region, thousands of protesters will take to the streets today across the Bay Area in a mass mobilization against the separation of more than 2,000 migrant children taken from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border under President Trump's "zero tolerance" policy.

After weeks of growing and near-universal condemnation of his child separation policy, Trump signed an executive order ostensibly ending the practice he himself began.

About 750 similar protests have been planned throughout the country in every state, from big cities such as NY and Los Angeles, to tiny ones such as Antler, North Dakota, population 28, and Willmar, population about 20,000.

More than 600 marches could draw hundreds of thousands of people across the country, from immigrant-friendly cities like Los Angeles and New York City to conservative Appalachia and Wyoming, under the banner Families Belong Together.

It is not the first such protest to take place, with almost 600 women arrested on Thursday during a sit-in at a US Senate building against the government's migration policy. "Reunite families now; end family internment camps and end the zero-humanity policy that created this humanitarian crisis and chaos in the first place".

Hundreds of children remain separated from their parents in shelters throughout the US.

The demonstrators were taken into custody by Capitol Police.

"I think it's very clear where we stand in Boston as far as being an immigrant city", he said, speaking at a press conference on security measures for the city's Fourth of July celebration.

Event organizers include Families Belong Together San Francisco, Women's March San Francisco and Indivisible SF. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) tweeted that she was also arrested.

Lee Gelernt, deputy director of its Immigrants' Rights Project, said the government has a constitutional obligation to release parents who don't pose a flight risk or danger, and that parents can choose to release their children if they don't want them to be in a family detention center.

"As a woman and as a mother, I refuse to stay silent as parents on the border are separated from their kids", said Tamika Mallory, co-chair of the Women's March, who was one of those arrested.

The White House has said that the order was not a long-term solution and has called for Congress to pass immigration reform.

"To finally have people on board wanting to take action, marching, taking to the streets, it's been motivating for us as advocates because we have to keep going", Rivas said.

She said the threat of deportation isn't just at the border.
