Trump's top economic adviser accuses Trudeau of back-stabbing after G7 summit

US President Donald Trump on Saturday withdrew his endorsement of a joint statement at the end of a G7 summit in Canada in a row over trade as he accused the summit's chairman and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of dishonesty.

Yet after leaving the summit, Mr Trump tweeted that he would instruct U.S. officials not to endorse the G7 statement, after objecting to comments from summit host Mr Trudeau.

"President Trump is targeting the dairy sector because he wants to dump US dairy into Canada", Lampron told The Canadian Press, adding that Canada imports five times more dairy from the USA than it exports.

Minutes after the publication of a joint communique that was approved by Trump and other Group of Seven leaders at a summit in the city of Quebec, the U.S. leader announced on Twitter that he was retracting his support.

Mr. Macron, feuding with Mr. Trump over USA steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, tweeted that he and the other six leaders were prepared to turn their backs on Mr. Trump at the summit. Trump will leave the summit early to attend a summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

Canada, the host of the two-day summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, and the nation that has borne much of the brunt of Trump's trade fusillades in recent days, is holding out hope that progress can be made on less controversial issues. "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't".

The U.S. president arrived several minutes after the start of the breakfast meeting between G7 leaders and the gender equality advisory council that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created for this year's summit in the Charlevoix region of Quebec.

When a CNN reporter asked Trump to respond to a question about whether he had sowed division in the G7 in what many have described as a G6-plus-one scenario, the president excoriated the reporter for perpetuating "fake news".

"The other leaders have been calling this G6 + 1 because Trump has been so isolated ever since this began, and that's because he launched an outright attack - that's in the view of the other members - on the global trading system by raising tariffs on steel and aluminum".
