"The U.S. efforts to impose its policies on others are expanding as a threat to all", Rouhani told the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a regional security grouping led by China and Russian Federation where Iran has observer status.

On his 19th visit to China after his recent re-election, Putin held talks with Xi while on his way to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting at Qingdao on Saturday.

The show of unity was in stark contrast to the calamitous end to the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec City, after US President Donald Trump disowned a joint summit statement and lambasted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak".

Xi and Putin also vowed to make "all possible efforts" to preserve the 2015 worldwide accord on Iran's nuclear programme that Trump abandoned last month.

"We value the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination", said Putin, adding that friendship between the heads of state and friendship between the two peoples are the solid foundation for the bilateral strategic cooperation.

US-Russian relations have been hit by years of disagreement over the Syrian conflict, Russia's annexation of Crimea and its involvement in eastern Ukraine.

On May 8, Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

In his interview to state-run CGTN, Putin described Xi as "approachable and sincere" and "a very dependable man to work with".

Xi, speaking just before he put the medal on Putin, called him a "good and old friend of the Chinese people".

"Russia welcomes the planned summit of the USA and North Korea and notes China's big contribution to helping settle the crisis on the Korean Peninsula", Putin said. Xi also stressed the importance of China and Russian Federation working ever closer together as both nations are permanent members of the UN Security Council and therefore must continue to coordinate at ever higher levels in order to establish protocols for peace at the highest levels of multiple global institutions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also criticised the U.S. for its withdrawal, claiming the decision could potentially destabilise the situation.

On the June 12 summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, Bloomberg reported Mr Putin said both Russian Federation and China agreed on the need for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The Islamic Republic, he said, "has invaluable experience in curtailing and weakening of extremist and terrorist currents, an example of which is cooperating with the government of Iraq and Syria in fighting ISIS (Daesh) terrorist".

"Why are we having a meeting without Russian Federation in the meeting?"

President Mamnoon Hussain and his Iran counterpart Hassan Rouhani agreed to bolster economic ties between the countries in a meeting held on Saturday in Qingdao, China.
