Nevada was the only state in the US included in the data that did not experience an increase from 1999 to 2016.

"Suicide is one of the top 10 causes of death in the United States right now, and it's one of three causes that is actually increasing recently, so we do consider it a public health problem - and something that is all around us", Schuchat said.

Suicide rates are higher in rural areas, with the gap between rates in urban and rural areas widening, with 2007 seeing the gap begin to widen more quickly, the CDC reports.

The increases range from six percent in DE to 58 percent in North Dakota.

Rhode Island and CT are among the 10 states with the lowest suicide rates, while ME is in the top quarter.

The highest rise was seen in western states, with an over 57 percent increase recorded in North Dakota.

Ohio's suicide rate rose 31-37 percent since the turn of the century.

Utah recently passed legislation providing for better staffed, more effective 24-hour hotlines for those considering suicide or for people anxious about friends. Particularly hard-hit were middle-aged adults (those aged 45 to 64).
