Despite its sports vehicle shape, the auto will have four doors.

The Taycan will be the first of Porsche's electric models but the carmaker has big plans to go the electric way.

Porsche makes different versions of all its cars, ranging from from fast to extremely fast, and it's expected to do the same with the Taycan. Full-electric and hybrid-electric cars will account for 25 percent of sales by 2025, the automaker said.

Though Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine already took a crack at it, and a small cadre of the automotive press got to drive a prototype a few miles at low speed to tease the powertrain, the Mission E electric sport sedan continues to move at a tantalizingly slow pace toward reality.

This version of the Taycan is expected to be the flagship model; Porsche has invested a further 500million Euros (£437million) into its electrification strategy to develop additional versions of the auto. The company says the vehicle can hit 60 mph in "well under" 3.5 seconds and 124 mph miles per in less than 12 seconds.

Harry and Meghan to make first public appearance since their honeymoon

The Porsche Taycan (codename: Porsche J1) is based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform. A crossover SUV version, called the Mission E Cross Turismo, was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The existing engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric motors, and a new body shop will also be developed.

The Taycan will have a great advantage with its 800-volt, 350-kw charging system. Claimed to be a loose translation of "lively young horse", Taycan isn't pronounced like the Liam Neeson movie franchise, but instead tie-con. This setup will allow the Taycan to be charged to 80 percent capacity in just 15 minutes, changing the way electric cars charge in the future.

Porsche AG named its first auto to directly compete with electric leader Tesla Inc. the Taycan, as the German manufacturer gears up for what will arguably be its most ambitious and potentially risky vehicle project ever.

The Taycan will have a range of 500 km and be able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.
